NLHI supports research into COVID-19-related cardiovascular complications

COVID-19 patients can develop cardiovascular complications, worsening their disease outcome compared to other COVID-19 patients. The underlying mechanism of this difference is unclear and treatment of these patients needs to be further optimized for future outbreaks. The Netherlands Heart Institute supports two clinical studies that focus on COVID-19 in relation to cardiovascular diseases.

CAPACITY registry
The partners of the Dutch CardioVascular Alliance (DCVA) - including the NHI - have launched the CAPACITY registry to follow COVID-19 patients with cardiovascular complications. In the CAPACITY registry, data will be collected from COVID-19 patients such as their medical background, occurrence of cardiovascular complications and further development of the disease. All hospitalized (highly suspected) COVID-19 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or current cardiovascular complications can join the observational study. More info can be found on https://capacity-covid.eu/.

PRAETORIAN-COVID study
The Praetorian study, leaded by Prof. dr. Niels van Royen and Prof. dr. Roland van Kimmenade, focuses on the use of angiotensin-receptor blocker Valsartan as a treatment for patients with COVID-19 to release disease burden. In this randomized trial, hospitalized COVID-19 patients will be followed for one year, during which organ function, quality of life and mortality rate of Valsartan treated patients will be compared to patients treated with a placebo. The NLHI has granted Prof. dr. van Royen financial support for this study.
