The Netherlands Heart Institute initiates and promotes world leading scientific research into the prevention and cure of cardiovascular disease. Our research is investigator driven. Our principal investigators and professors initiate our projects. The Netherlands Heart Institute does not do contract research.
Our research is organised in five lines: congenital heart disease, atherosclerosis, arrhythmias, genetics and imaging. Our research is conducted in the clinics and laboratories of the eight university medical centers.
The Durrer center for cardiogenetic research, founded in 2008, is one of the focal points of Netherlands Heart Institute. By bringing together patient data and DNA material from all our studies, we hope to initiate innovative new science.
The Netherlands Heart Foundation, ZonMW, STW, the European Union, the private sector as well as the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences fund our research.
